In their first race of the year to include novices, Wheaton Crew's performance at the East Fork Chase in Cincinatti was markedly improved from the week before. This course was 2.8 miles and included a sharp turn to starboard for the last third of the race. The Women's V4+ A raced in adverse conditions compared to their competition, but still managed to come within 20 seconds of the leading Indiana University. The Men's Varsity 4+ A beat Xavier University by a staggering minute and fifteen seconds.

Wheaton Crew opened up the season at the Milwaukee River Challenge on September 15th. This is a double head race, with 2 2.2 mile races in opposite directions. Very much a coxswain's race, the course curves through many bridges. Varsity rowers only participated. After just a few practices and against stiff competition, no one was hurt and no equipment was damaged in the race.

In all seriousness, Wheaton Crew had an enjoyable time in Milwaukee and a good warm up for the rest of the season. Following the race, many Wheaton rowers jumped into the freezing Lake Michigan.
